Every time I post my skincare routine on Instagram and if this product is in the line up I tend to get least one question about it (mainly because of gold flecks). About time, I write about it and refer to this post when asked again (knowing my luck no one will ever ask again lol).
Egyptians believed the healing powers of gold could cure all manner of physical, mental and spiritual ailments. Romans used gold preparations for treatment of skin lesions and sores. It is believed that Cleopatra wore pure gold for a radiant complexion. In ancient Chinese medicine, gold was the secret to youthful skin. The application of gold compounds to medicine, called chrysotherapy, reduces inflammation beneficial in the treatment of a variety of diseases, but this therapy often causes adverse gold-related skin reactions
Many luxury spas use 24-carat gold leaf treatments to hydrate, firm and moisturize the skin, claiming reduced fine lines and wrinkles and resulting in smooth and radiant skin. A news feed from the World Gold Council site reported a gold leaf facial treatment created in Japan declaring gold leaf put on the face naturally rejuvenates skin and reduce wrinkles. According to the creators of the treatment, gold locks in moisture and keeps skin firm by maintaining collagen in the skin and inhibiting the breakdown of elastin (Source: Livestrong).
Moving onto this gem, 24K Bio Gold Water from Bio Essence claims:
Ingredient Listing (major pain getting this information, because I disposed the box – huge mistake)
Water, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Pollen Extract, Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Acrylamide/Ammonium Acrylate Copolymer, Swiftlet Nest Extract, Dimethicone, Gold Foil, DMDM Hydantoin, Methylparaben, Allantoin, Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) Extract, Royal Jelly Powder, Fragrance, Zinc Chloride, Sodium Oxide, Calcium Oxide, Magnesium Oxide, Alumina, Ferric Chloride, CI 19140, CI 15985 & CI 16255
Whilst it doesn’t have a Rolls Royce ingredient listing, I find the addition of ingredients (in bold) benefit the skin by plumping and hydrating. Some skins may not tolerate the Royal Jelly powder however most skins would absorb it well.
Texture & Consistency is gloopy gel with golf flecks when dispensed from bottle. Feels like just any essence (SKII or Shiseido). I massage/schmear it on skin, and then gently pat it in skin. The gold flecks disappear and get absorbed in the skin. I’ve not walked out of my bathroom with disco gold flecks on my face. The skin appears plump and hydrated. On touch, skin feels soft and smooth.
I generally use this as a second tone (post acid) or as primary tone. Sometimes, I mix with couple of drops of any light oil and pat in skin. It leaves a glowy dewy finish, and proceed to makeup base.

Gold Serum – Farmacia Barcelona
It seems the gold flecks skincare is really catching on across the globe 😉 Hopefully this answers some of your million dollar questions about this essence. If there is something I’ve not covered, please leave your questions in comments below.
