Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Serums

P1020470

Dr Dennis Gross has recently launched a new serum called Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Overnight Serum. I was left perplexed at this launch, considering I’ve already used, repurchased and loved Ferulic Acid + Retinol Brightening Solution. That’s where my quest to decode the formula began (to the best of my ability, neither am I Dr. DG nor am I Chemist!).

P1020476

As I decoded the ingredients, claims and performance, it made more sense which serum to use by who and when. Whilst the similarity of names throws you off, they’re really intended for different purposes.

OLD – BRIGHTENING SOLUTION

NEW – OVERNIGHT SERUM

Clinical/Professional Strength Serum Overnight Serum
Sun damage, uneven skin tone, brown spots, scars, overall brightening Appearance of wrinkles, recovers the look of firmness, and retexturizes skin’s appearance
Texture: Colorless Gel Liquid Texture: Light ‘Creamish’ Serum
Packaging: Brown glass bottle with pipette $88 – 30ml Packaging: Brown plastic bottle with pump (big tick from me) $88 – 30ml
Audience: Anyone really with sun damage or uneven skin tone Audience: Possibly someone with signs of aging, although can be used as a preventative measure too
Performance: In my experience of 2 bottles down, I think it is brilliant with overall brightening and dealing with brown spots, and new scars from those bastards we reluctantly welcome each month. Skin appears more refined and even toned. Performance: In my limited experience (3-4 uses), I think it’s more moisturizing on skin and really an all-round serum. I don’t have visible signs of aging yet (yet being an operative word) so wont be able to comment directly on its claims.

Ingredient Summary for both formulations:

All hard hitters, performance oriented ingredients are in the beginning of the list, whilst preservatives towards the end (and that’s how it should be!). Making it quite a desirable formulation.

Formulated with Antioxidants and skin Brighteners like Arbutin, derivative of Azelaic Acid, Licorice.

Of course an addition of our beloved acids too, like Ferulic, Salicylic, Glycolic, and Mandelic.

One Word: Niacinamide (listed as Third Ingredient) aka vitamin B3 and nicotinic acid, niacinamide is a potent cell-communicating ingredient that offers multiple benefits for aging skin. Assuming skin is being protected from sun exposure, niacinamide can improve skin’s elasticity, dramatically enhance its barrier function, help erase discolorations, and revive skin’s healthy tone and texture (Source: Beautypedia).

Acids: Ferulic, Gallic, Linoleic, Linolenic, Mandellic, and Lactic

Water, Ethoxydiglycol (solvent used as thinner), Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate (Azelaic Acid Derivative) , Ferulic Acid, Retinol, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi Leaf Extract, Arbutin (skin brightening)Morus Nigra Fruit Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Mandelic Acid, Hexylresorcinol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol, Panthenol, Quercetin, Disodium Lauriminodipropionate Tocopheryl Phosphates (derivative of Vitamin E used for scarring), Ubiquinone (Co EnzymeQ10), Lecithin, Disodium EDTA, PVM/MA Decadiene Crosspolymer, BHT, Urea, Polysorbate 20, Potassium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol. Birchbox – February 2015

Good morning beautiful people 🙂 Ive been away traveling for work and when I return home I find a nice welcome home package waiting for me. Yes its Birchbox time.

P1010100 P1010101

Derma E Anti Wrinkle Vitamin A and Glycolic Scrub – Trialled this last night after a draining and dehydrating flight home, it just gave my skin a boost. Its going to be my travel companion.

Fake Blowout Hair Refresher Dry Shampoo – Loved the fragrance of the dry shampoo, but yet to try it properly.

Not Soap, Radio Body Wash – Yet another body wash, just like any other body wash…..mehhh

Summit Color Contrast Eyeliner (shade teal) – Holy smokes, this liner doesn’t budge or smear at all. Its soft, smooth no need to pull or tug the eye and incredibly pigmented. Need an oil based cleanser to get rid of it. Certainly will purchase black and brown shades of this pencil.

theBalm Read my Lips – Such a lovely peachy coral-ly shade, nicely pigmented, very moisturizing to the lips. Definitely purchasing a full size tube and curious to explore other shades.

Overall this month made up for last months boo-boo. I also love the classy floral print on sides of the box 🙂 Birchbox you made me a very happy gal for the short month of Feb.

Did you receive your boxes, what did you think of them?

Birchbox – January 2015

Good Morning my lovelies. My favorite time of the month came with immense disappoint. My face just dropped, nothing in the box to half excite me.

P1010040 P1010038

Coastal Scents Eye Shadow Pallete (Latte) – Birchbox you need to read my profile thoroughly, I said no makeup! I’m not huge on eyeshadows, basic winged liner or slightly smoky liner and I’m happy. This has some basic colors which you can’t go wrong with but they aren’t buttery so not the smoothest application.

Harvey Prince Sincerely – It sure smells nice but the sillage is nothing to rave about.

Number 4 Hair Care Hairspray – I really dislike No 4 Hair products, I don’t fully understand why Birchbox are so obsessed with this brand. Their products are mediocre and don’t always deliver. Plus the nozzle is damaged. Epic fail.

Tocca Crema da Mani Cleopatra – A moment here to highlight the fact that I’ve received a sample of this product in the past from Birchbox and they’ve repeated yet again (just different scent)!!! Sure these hand creams smell heavenly but they don’t nourish the skin or doesn’t absorb well. Another Epic fail.

Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream – I’m yet to try this.

Overall, not a good start to the year Birchbox but I can only hope for a better box next month! Hope and positive thinking is what 2015 is all about.

What did you think of your boxes ladies?

Birchbox – December 2014

Hello Lovelies, its Birchbox time again! Unfortunately the delivery of my box was delayed and I’m assuming the postal services were inundated with loved ones sending Christmas goodies across the states. Anyway, here’s what was I received in moi box:

P1000969

P1000966Amika Nourishing Mask – yet to try, however I’m completely over receiving hair products in my box.

Embryolisse Lait – Creme Concentre – Hmmm this is a tricky one, I’m aware its received a cult status among UK beauty bloggers. However one ingredient of this product may not suit my sensitive acne prone skin which is Paraffinum Liquidium. I might patch test on my jaw and then work my way to the rest of my face. Obvs very apprehensive about this one!

Essentiel Elements Wake up Rosemary Body Gel– So here how it goes, smells good. But seriously Birchbox, this a complete cop out. Body Wash!!! I was hoping for something more special for Christmas. Yes more special than a darn body wash!

Mirenesse iCurl Secret Weapon – One can have never have enough mascaras, as simple as that. This was a sample choice and I’m yet to try. If it doesn’t work for my upper lashes, with the brush being so small I can use on my lower lashes, win win.

Rusk Texture Spray – Put simply, Bloody Fab! I’m buying the full size product. It has given my fine, limp hair new life. It feels thicker, more manageable and gosh the Volume. Defo Buy.

Overall, the box left me very very underwhelmed this month with slow delivery, hair mask and body wash. The texture spray and the box itself (bright blue with golden polka dots) were a saving grace.

Birchbox – November 2014

Before I say anything, I want to say out aloud I love this month’s box!

P1000908 P1000905

amika Dry Shampoo – yet to try but packaging is super cute!

Dr. Jart + Ceramidin Cream – this is a great dupe for Priori Barrier Repair Complex, very lightly fragranced and easily absorbed in skin. Considering a full size purchase.

Gilchrist & Soames – what…why Birchbox? This was one sample that seemed like a complete cop out with no effort. Mehhh but who doesnt use a body wash?! The scent of this body wash would be an acquired taste, not my cuppa!

Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive – I was really looking forward to this one in particular, I have been curious about this product for a while. World knows I’m an AHA junkie so this product ticks all boxes ingredients wise. On application no tingling sensation on my skin, it felt tight as it dried but not uncomfortable at all. When I washed my face with cold water my skin was red which barely lasted for 3-4mins. Very curious to try the full strength one.

the Balm Cindy Lou-Manizer – little goes a very long way! Love using this as a highlighter when I’m wearing peachy toned blush.

Yet to devour the delicious sample of Almond Butter.

Did you Like or Love your box this month?

Happy Weekend my lovelies …..
